In the DISCOVER Projects at the University of Arizona, we believe that people have several different measurable intelligences, not just one.  We also believe that all of us can be more successful by understanding our unique patterns of these intelligences and then applying them to our interests.  In fact, nearly 20 years of research and collaboration with children, parents and teachers around the world has given us powerful new perspectives on learning and development.  It is now possible to customize and focus education in ways never before imagined.  Learning in this style is more fun, engaging, and effective because it draws upon each child’s natural strengths and uses those strengths to develop better understanding.  For more information, visit the DISCOVER website at:  discover.arizona.edu

The DISCOVER Summer Program, serving a small number of students in grades 1-8, integrates many of these exciting techniques to provide a unique learning experience for you and your child this summer.  This two-week adventure uses problem solving, hands-on learning, enhancement of creativity, arts integration, and multiple intelligences profiles to stimulate growth in areas of interest and non-interest alike.  What likely will be perceived as “a lot of fun” by the participants will actually be exercises carefully designed to challenge and interest their developing bodies and minds.

To be most effective, the summer program requires that an all-day DISCOVER Assessment of your child’s abilities be completed in advance, allowing the program to be customized for its participants.

The Assessment dates for U.S. students will be June 22nd and June 29th. International students will be assessed just prior to the summer program.  The deadline for registration is June 15.  A $25 discount will be given for registrations received before June 1.  After we receive your registration, we will contact you to give you the date, time, and exact location for your child’s assessment.  We will then schedule a personal interview or send an interest inventory for your child to complete.

The summer program will be held from July 15 through July 26 at the First United Methodist Church, 915 E. 4th Street (just west of the University between Park and Tyndall).  It will operate between the hours of 9-2, with some flexibility.  Pre and post childcare available at an additional charge.  The total cost is $450 per child, and includes the Assessment (normally $250 but discounted to $150 as part of this offer); the two week summer program; healthy snacks each day; an interview with the student prior to beginning the program; conferences between parents, students, and teachers, to provide recommendations resulting from the Assessment; observations during the program; and student interviews.  Language support options available for the DISCOVER Assessment and Summer Program include Spanish, Japanese, Chinese, and French.
